Varney Place South BethelSituated near the crest of a picturesque “swell of land” south of Bethel Hill village, this nineteenth century homestead was originally part of the extensive farm holdings of Solomon Annas, who came to Bethel from Warner, NH in the 1790s. His son, Benjamin Annas, likely built the existing side-hall house and large barn around 1850, at a time when North America’s first international railroad – between Portland and Montreal – was being constructed through Bethel. Today, open fields and nearby farming activities testify to the continued importance of agriculture to the Annas family and their neighbors during the Civil War era and afterwards. The homestead, now Paws Inn, retains much of its historic character, including a porch offering views of forested hillsides and charming river valleys that transport visitors back to an earlier time.
